It’s almost a year since chartered accountant, Jonathan Sturm became a BUSINESS buddy franchisee, looking after growing businesses in and around Pukekohe, Waiuku, Karaka and Drury.

BUSINESS buddy action in Franklin

“The main focus of my first year was establishing my client base,” says Jonathan.

“When I saw an opportunity to run my own BUSINESS buddy franchise – I could see the potential to really help other business owners.

“I have worked with several local companies and it is rewarding seeing their businesses thrive.”

This year has also had its fair share of challenges and surprises for Jonathan.

“Coming from a corporate background, its been eye-opening to see how many people have a shoebox approach to business accounting,” says Jonathan.

“If this is you, you are definitely are not alone.

“Often successful sole traders and small business owners wait too long before they realise they need help from an accountant,” says Jonathan.

“For example, it’s common for small business owners to use credit cards to pay for things.

“If you are using your credit card to pay for bills it becomes very time-consuming to separate business and personal transactions, and calculate your GST.

“Many start-ups and small businesses mix up business and personal bank accounts and in extreme cases don’t even have a business bank account. This is a recipe for disaster.

“If you don’t have a separate business bank account, you can’t use cloud-based software such as Xero – a game changer and huge time saver.

Time is money and when the stakes are high, business owners must focus on what matters the most, their work.

Jonathan helps clients to maximise profit using management information rather than just helping with tax compliance.

“Some people think an accountant is just an extra cost, but the reality is that most accountants will save their business many times their cost,” says Jonathan

“Having face-to-face contact on a regular basis with someone you trust with your business matters is invaluable.”

By drawing up a budget and cash flow forecasts, Jonathan can identify ways to apply big business principles to growing businesses, helping them achieve their goals.
